Current Projects
The Mending Room returns this time for three years (2026 – 2028) back on its home turf of Brixton, South London where it will collaborate with children and young people, parents, teachers, youth workers, community stakeholders, residents, health professionals and policymakers to shape ideas, co design and reimagine elements of the CAMHS service, whilst shifting policy and sparking system change.
This time it will be a targeted research programme that employs Speculative Design Thinking and Legislative Theatre methods to co-create a space designed by and for a team of 12 Menders whose knowledge, insight and expertise of mental health challenges will explore and share their thoughts, feelings and experiences of health care through creative activities of their choice.
This outing will aim to address the following challenges:
- An increase in emerging mental health issues in CYP in South London
- Pressure and overload on the current care system
- The lack of trust in traditional health care services
It’s part of a wider project that has been funded by https://maudsleycharity.org/our-grants/building-brighter-futures/ called Creative Communities, Creating Change, its an accessible, engaging, effective and holistic programme for young people through a new partnership between experienced community-based creative healthcare practitioners (Raw Material, Tony Cealy) and NHS services (NHS DISCOVER, NHS EPEC: Empowering Parents, Empowering Communities).
As a collective we are creating a community to build capacity for local neighbourhood radical care, social connectedness, increasing emotional wellbeing, reducing the impact of emerging mental health illness in young people, parents and carers using creative health approaches provided within a community-based hub as a vehicle for change.
